How to tie an English gum.

It is said that a self-stitched thing was a success if it does not look stitched by hand. But the things bound by hands should look exactly like handwork - this is their exclusivity and value. But high-quality hand-knitting is simply obliged to be accurate. And for beginning knitters, this is not always good. However, there are types of mating, which even inexperienced craftswomen manage to literally the first time. These include the English gum. The fabric connected by this pattern turns out equal (an eyelet to an eyelet), accurate and corrugated. How to tie the English gum to "mosquito nose is not undermined"?

It is very easy to learn, and you can use such a pattern when knitting a wide variety of things: scarves and hats, sportswear, jackets and pullovers. Particularly successful are children's things connected by an English eraser: voluminous and dense, but at the same time light due to a variety of holes, as in openwork patterns.
So, the English gum: how to knit this simple, effective and very popular pattern, which, besides, can be of different types?

Traditional or classic English gum

First you need to link the sample to calculate the number of loops. When knitting English gum is especially important, as the fabric is very lush and easy to stretch.

In the classic English elastic band, the front and wrong side of the canvas look exactly the same. To obtain such an effect, we knit the first row, alternating one facial and one purl loops. In the second row after removing the edge knit: one front, one straight nakid, one purl. Pay attention: we knot the facial knots over the facial ones (according to the picture), purl ones - on the wrong ones, nakidas - between them. We knit all the subsequent rows (both even and odd) in the same way: we do a nakid, we remove the front one, the wrong one with the previous one, we knit it with the wrong side.

Semi-english or semi-patent gum

In the semi-English elastic band, the pattern from the front and the seamy side is slightly different. From the face - smoother, from the inside - more relief.

We collect an odd number of loops (plus two edging).
First row. We knit a facial loop, we make a straight wrap (spoke to ourselves), we remove the next loop untied (the working thread remains at work, that is, behind the loop). Thus we knit the whole row to the end. Please note that in this row the working thread always remains on the wrong side of the canvas (behind the loops).
Second row. We begin to knit it with a straight nakida (knitting needle to itself). Then one loop, (the one that was in the first row of the front) is removed without tying (as in the previous row, the thread is at work). Next, remove the loop and nakid first row knit one face loop. And so we knit the entire second row: we remove one nakid, remove one loop, loop and nakid together the front one.
Third row His knitting is similar to the second row: we knit the loop and nakid the second row together with the front loop, we make a straight nakid, we remove the loop without provyazyvaniya. Make sure that the thread always remains at work.
Next, knit all the even rows as a second, all odd - like the third.
Color English gum

For receiving of a bilateral and multi-colored cloth, use circular knitting needles or long straight with two working ends (as toes). It is clear that for such an elastic band you need two balls of threads of different colors.

To knit a colored English eraser (for example, a dark and light thread) with vertical stripes, you need to type an odd number of loops. The principle of knitting is the same as in the classic English gum, only all the odd rows are knitted by a dark thread, and all even ones are knitted by a light one.

First row (dark thread): one front, one nakid, one remove.
Second row (light thread): one nakid, one we remove, one facial along with the nakid.
We move the third row (dark thread) to the opposite side, knit it: we put a nakid together with a loop, as one purl, one nakid, we take off one.
The fourth row (light thread): one nakid, one we remove, nakid together with a loop, as one purl.
Fifth row (dark thread): we move the canvas to the other side, knit: put the nakid with the loop as one face, one nakid, remove one.
Next, repeat the knitting from the second row.
To get a colored English eraser with horizontal stripes, knit a classic version: two rows in one color, two rows in another. In this way, you get narrow strips (the width of one loop of the English gum). For wider stripes, it is necessary to knit more, but necessarily an even number of rows in one color. By the way, for color bars you can use not two, but much more colors, and stripes can be made of different widths. Economical craftswomen manage from the remnants of multi-colored yarn to knit just the same exclusive things!

Useful Tips

1. If you combine English gum with other patterns, do not forget about the different density of the resulting canvas.
2. Things connected with an English eraser can stretch a lot after washing. Therefore, dry them only spreading out on a horizontal surface.
3. Do not use the English gum for finishing the edges of products (sleeves, shelves, neck).
4. The thicker knitting needles you use for knitting, the more the English gum will stretch.
5. Consider that, thanks to the corrugated structure of the canvas, clothing connected with an English elastic band is able to emphasize both the advantages and disadvantages of any figure.
6. Before knitting an English gum with needles, be sure to knit a pattern in order to correctly calculate the required number of loops. Otherwise, you risk getting a thing several sizes larger.
Try this way of knitting, invented by neat British - the result will pleasantly surprise you!
